Pivot Legal, LLP is an unusual law firm. For one thing, all the lawyers who work there are also social-justice activists; and for another, 100% of the firm’s profits go to fund its sister non-profit organization, Pivot Legal Society. This social enterprise model is gaining in popularity, as non-profits look for sustainable alternatives to raising money through donations and grants.

To translate Pivot’s unique brand into an online context, we worked with them to develop a content structure and design that speaks to the firm’s strengths and values. The lawyers at Pivot are demystifying the often-opaque territory of the law through blog posts, events and workshops, and a growing library of legal resources. There’s even a searchable directory of free legal services where people can access free legal advice. The entire site runs on Drupal’s open-source content management system, with extensive customization to integrate each lawyer’s profile with the content s/he posts.

The personal, approachable quality of the firm is set through the content and carried through the visual design of the site, which is crisp and airy, with none of the stuffiness associated with most law websites. Large, close-up photographs of the lawyers set the tone on the home page, and are paired with short quotes about why each of them pursued a career combining law and social change.

Beyond establishing Pivot as the law firm of choice for socially-conscious Vancouverites, our hope is that the website communicates a little of the personality and style of each of Pivot’s lawyers, and helps to connect Pivot LLP’s clients to the social justice work carried out by the Society.
